Veteran Malayalam actor and writer Sreenivasan passes away

Renowned Malayalam actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker Sreenivasan, who left an indelible mark on Malayalam cinema with his distinctive performances and socially relevant storytelling, passed away in Kochi on Saturday (December 20, 2025). He was 69.

Sreenivasan had been undergoing treatment for cardiac-related and other health issues for some time. He is survived by his wife, Vimala Sreenivasan, and his sons—actors and filmmakers Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan.

Born on April 6, 1956, in Pattiam near Thalassery in Kannur district, Sreenivasan enjoyed a prolific career spanning nearly five decades. He appeared in more than 225 films, excelling in both comic and character roles.

As a screenwriter, he penned several landmark films that shaped modern Malayalam cinema, including Sandesham, Azhakiya Ravanan, Varavelpu, Nadodikattu, and Thalayanamanthram. His directorial ventures, notably Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, earned widespread critical acclaim and audience appreciation.

In recognition of his immense contribution to cinema, Sreenivasan received numerous honours, including a National Film Award and six Kerala State Film Awards.
