Salim Kumar passes away at 56; Malayalam cinema mourns huge loss

National Award-winning Malayalam actor and director Salim Kumar passed away at the age of 56 on the night of June 6 at a private hospital in Kochi. He was reportedly admitted earlier in the day due to pneumonia and later suffered a sudden cardiac arrest while on ventilator support, according to hospital sources.

Born on October 10, 1969, in North Paravur, Kerala, Salim Kumar began his artistic journey in mimicry before emerging as one of Malayalam cinema’s most popular and versatile performers. Over a career spanning nearly three decades, he became widely known for his ability to shift effortlessly from comedy to deeply emotional and critically acclaimed character roles.

One of his most celebrated achievements came in 2010 when he won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his powerful performance in Adaminte Makan Abu, a role that showcased his depth beyond comedy. Earlier, he also received the Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actor in 2005 for his performance in Achanurangatha Veedu.

Following his death, tributes poured in from across the film industry, political leaders, and fans. Co-star and veteran actor Mammootty described him as a deeply connected soul and called the loss “an unending sorrow.” Actor and Union Minister Suresh Gopi praised him for creating a unique language of humor, while Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan remembered him as a rare talent who could make audiences laugh and cry with equal ease.
