Malayalam cinema emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 72nd National Film Awards. Veteran actor Mammootty was selected as Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Bramayugam. He shared the award with Bollywood actor Kartik Aaryan, who was honoured for his performance in Chandu Champion.
This marks Mammootty's fourth National Film Award for Best Actor, equalling the record held by Amitabh Bachchan for winning the prestigious honour four times.
Actress Yami Gautam was named Best Actress for her performance in Article 370.
Feminichi Fathima was selected as the Best Malayalam Film.
The awards were announced by acclaimed Malayalam filmmaker and Jury Chairman Jayaraj at a press conference held at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. Films certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during 2024 were considered for this year's National Film Awards.

Director Kamlesh K. Mishra's Kakkori won the National Award for Best Biographical/Historical Compilation Film. Director Ravi Raj Murmu received the National Award for Best Debut Director.
The Marathi-English film Bhangar won the National Award for Best Non-Feature Film.
The Tamil film Meiyazhagan received a Special Jury Mention. Actor Dhanush's Captain Miller also received a Special Jury Mention.
Produced by Shivdhwaj Studios, Imbu won the National Award for Best Tulu Film.
Director Dinesh P. Bhonsle's Dholi won the National Award for Best Garhwali Film.
Director Yadu Vamsi's Committee Kurrollu won the National Award for Best Telugu Film.
