Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is set to reunite with director Jeethu Joseph for Drishyam 3. The duo’s previous films, Drishyam and Drishyam 2, were massive blockbusters and have been remade in multiple Indian languages.
On Thursday, Mohanlal confirmed the news by sharing a photo with Jeethu Joseph and producer Antony Perumbavoor. Posting on social media, he wrote, “The Past Never Stays Silent. Drishyam 3 Confirmed! #Drishyam3”.
Released in 2013, Drishyam is a gripping crime thriller written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. The film starred Mohanlal, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Asha Sharath, Siddique, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Roshan Basheer, and Neeraj Madhav. Produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas, the story revolves around Georgekutty and his family, who become prime suspects when Varun Prabhakar, the son of IG Geetha Prabhakar, goes missing.
The film was a massive success, running in theatres for over 150 days. In the UAE, it set a record as the longest-running Malayalam film, completing 125 days. Drishyam held the title of the highest-grossing Malayalam film until Pulimurugan surpassed it in 2016. It remained among the top 10 highest-grossing Malayalam films for a decade until Neru, another Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph collaboration, broke the record.
The film was later remade in Hindi with the same title, featuring Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn in the lead. It was also adapted into several Indian languages, including Kannada (Drishya, 2014), Telugu (Drushyam, 2014), Tamil (Papanasam, 2015), and Hindi (Drishyam, 2015).
Internationally, Drishyam was remade in Sinhala as Dharmayuddhaya and in Chinese as Sheep Without a Shepherd. Additionally, adaptations were announced in Indonesian and Korean, making it the first Indian film to be remade in both languages.
With Drishyam 3 now officially in the works, fans eagerly await the next chapter in Georgekutty’s gripping saga.
