When the question arises about the film that marked one of the biggest turning points in Mohanlal’s career, one of the first names that comes to mind is undoubtedly Kireedam. Even today, Malayalis hold close to their hearts the character Sethumadhavan and the film itself. The movie, created by the legendary duo of Lohithadas and Sibi Malayil, has secured a permanent place in the history of Malayalam cinema. Sethumadhavan became one of the finest and most memorable characters in Mohanlal’s acting career.
Released in 1989, the film now completes 36 years since its original release. The makers have announced that Kireedam is set for a re-release in stunning 4K visuals with Dolby Atmos sound. An official poster wishing Mohanlal on his birthday was also unveiled. Presented by Seven Arts International Limited in association with the National Film Development Corporation of India (NFDC), the film will return to theatres in June.
Kireedam was produced under the banner of Kripa Films by N. Krishnakumar (popularly known as Kireedam Unni) and Dinesh Panicker. The film elevated Mohanlal to a level never seen before in his career. So much so that when people hear the name Kireedam, they remember Sethumadhavan first and Mohanlal next.
This is a film crafted by Lohithadas, a master storyteller who deeply understood the helplessness and emotional complexities of human beings; by Sibi Malayil, a master craftsman of cinema; and by the musical genius Johnson. Through the unforgettable emotional moments created by the on-screen chemistry between Mohanlal as Sethumadhavan and Thilakan as Achuthan Nair, the film continues to remain an emotional wound in the hearts of audiences.
Kireedam tells the tragic story of how the dreams of an entire family are shattered, turning a young man into a criminal and a rowdy, forcing upon him a painful “crown of thorns.” Through the brilliant collaboration of Lohithadas and Sibi Malayil, this story transformed into one of Malayalam cinema’s greatest classics.
